Bree Calkins
Bree works full time as a science teacher. She teaches IB Biology, Forensic Science and Honors Chemistry. She enjoys spending time with her students. Before becoming a teacher, she worked as a Forensic DNA Analyst for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Bree holds degrees from the University of Denver (B.S. Molecular Biology), Sam Houston State University (M.S. Forensic Science - Forensic Biology), and Regent University (M.Ed. Curriculum & Instruction- Gifted Education).
Bree lives with her Husband, her son, both of her parents, and two fluffy Maine Coons. While in high school, Bree developed a love for photography and art. She started focusing her spare time on her photography skills and has been dedicated to learning as much as she can about the creation of art and how it relates to technology and learning. She frequently goes on nature hikes with her family to enjoy the outdoors and photograph its beauty. Some of her favorite shots can be seen below.
During the pandemic, Bree realized she needed an outlet for stress, so she started painting, this eventually lead to the creation of jewelry and home décor items, as well as experimentation with resin as an art medium. During quarantine, Bree also realized that her Biology students were incredibly stressed out about pending exams and were lamenting about the days they could "disconnect" and color. So she set out to create a coloring book dedicated to reviewing concepts from the IB Biology curriculum while creating images her students could remember. This lead to her publishing "Color me, Bio!" and was the start of her obsession with the creation of educational and stress relief coloring books. She now has two educational coloring books, with plans for more, as well as animal themed books that help adults and children alike engage their art side of their brains so they can feel that rush of dopamine!
